River Recap: You knew this was coming so don’t act surprised (and I know it’s long Chad just deal with it)!

August 11, 2008

What do you get when you mix a bunch of 30 somethings with 2 days of late nights and possibly a little alcohol?  Umm, I know, I know!  You get a bunch of really tired, lethargic 30 somethings who can talk about nothing else but how old they are.

Yep it was a fun and somewhat crazy weekend – and for me crazy includes going out two nights in a row.  Friday night was a blast – just ask Jon, oh wait maybe not the best choice – ask Beth instead.  We ate at Iron Cactus and the girls went googoo over a former Bachelor contestant.  Then it was on to the Blind Pig, no I am not making an ex-boyfriend reference although that is a pretty accurate description.  The porch provided a beautiful view of our capital city, as well as two gentlemen with waist length beards and tie-dye shirts (just keepin Austin weird).  After an hour of stifling heat we decided to venture somewhere with air conditioning so Treasure Island it was!  And yes, I danced, well, I danced mostly by myself in that ½ kidding sort of way so as not to give the impression that I actually think I can dance (which I am well aware that I cannot).  Tawna and Chad had a dance off; which only made Chad realize that his knee is definitely screwed up (from what you ask, just ask me in private and I will tell you all about it).

Per usual at the stroke of midnight Chad and I made “it’s time to go” eye contact, we don’t like to disappoint the people who are assuming that we will leave early.  And we all headed off in our respective cabs to prepare for the day ahead…..that is, except for Josh of course.  Josh braved the night with Pat, Sean and Sarah.  And even engaged in some intellectual political debates – although at 3:30 AM I am not sure how intellectual one can be.

Saturday began with a less than lovely Courtyard breakfast.  Are eggs supposed to come in shapes?  Tawna and Vanessa had melon ball hangovers, from cutting fruit late into the night for their sangria….oh wait, Vanessa drank beer so she probably just fell for Tawna’s sales pitch of “Who wants to hang out in my room later, it will be SO MUCH FUN!”  Oh Vanessa, silly, silly girl.  Josh totally rallied from his late night and was ready to go on time.  And in no time it was OFF TO THE RIVER………I mean the busiest gas station possible where we would find ourselves stalled for 30 minutes, and then we were OFF TO THE RIVER…..oh wait, there is a train, and then yes another train.  BOOOOO, one hour and two U turns later we arrived at the river.  Wahoo.

And another 45 minutes later we were actually standing in the river with floats in hand.  OH and I can’t not mention the 70 year old man wearing a neon green THONG banana hammock drinking a beer, so there it is the official mention of the old man in the thong now we can all push it out of our memories  forever (as if that’s possible).

Ahh the river, a calm relaxing environment where a person can just sit back and push aside all the craziness of the day.  (Insert record scratching)  Ahh the river, where a person can get hit in the head with a bag of ice thrown by a well meaning slightly intoxicated patron, get called dumb by a TCU graduate (magna com laude or latte, as if we cared anyway), almost drown (twice), lose their Oakleys, hat, one flip flop, come dangerously close to losing their bikini bottoms, get rescued by a very nice Hispanic father and son and get nearly fatally injured by a rogue rock or two.  I think that about sums it up.

Here are 6 things I learned while floating the Guadalupe:

1.     Asses Up means: ASSES UP WAY UP (Jarod)

2.    You really can have too much rum (Chad)

3.    4 day old sandwiches taste better after 15 beers (Josh)

4.    Moms can have fun too – a lot of fun (Gigi)

5.    Strangers can spot a Neiman Marcus employee from a mile away (Tawna)

6.     It’s ok to crash a wedding reception as long as you are wearing a bathing suit
